Wahoo KICKR ROLLR: Experience Seamless Indoor Cycling without Wheel Removal

It’s difficult to say definitively which type of indoor cycling trainer is the best, but roller trainers are undoubtedly the most classic and provide the most realistic feel of riding on the road. The Wahoo KICKR ROLLR takes roller trainers to the next level, transforming them into smart trainers that are easy to set up in seconds and feature a gripper lock system that makes riding safer and more convenient.

Many cyclists may face a common problem: their bodies and minds crave a cycling adventure, but weather or external factors prevent them from hopping on their saddles and heading out. This is why many cyclists opt for indoor training rollers to continue their training at home. Wahoo has unveiled its latest smart roller trainer, the KICKR ROLLR, designed to provide a comfortable and realistic on-road cycling experience.

Easy to use, no need to switch devices

Bicycle trainers come in various forms with varying advantages and disadvantages. For instance, some models require removing the rear wheel, making setup and operation time-consuming and cumbersome. Roller trainers, on the other hand, are considered the most traditional type, allowing users to mount their bikes directly onto a set of three rollers (one front and two rear) without removing wheels or installing additional equipment.

Similarly, the KICKR ROLLR takes just seconds to set up, regardless of the bike being used. Simply adjust the wheelbase, secure the front wheel, and start riding. This eliminates the need to constantly switch between indoor and outdoor cycling setups.

Easily adjust the length of the KICKR ROLLR to accommodate bikes of all sizes by adjusting the wheelbase. Simply open the lock at the base of the trainer, make the adjustment, and ensure the tire sits within the wheelbase range of 950 to 1100 millimeters.

Features a front wheel clamp, eliminating the need for balance skills.

A potential safety drawback of roller trainers is the lack of a locking mechanism to prevent the bike from tipping over. This can make them less suitable for beginners who may require more balance and stability. However, the Wahoo KICKR ROLLR addresses this issue and enhances the overall safety and usability of roller trainers by incorporating a V-shaped structure as a front wheel gripper. This gripper securely locks the front wheel in place and is compatible with 700c road bike tires (up to 2.1 inches or 53 millimeters) for both rim and disc brakes.

Device connection

The Wahoo KICKR ROLLR is a smart trainer, but due to its roller design, it does not come with an integrated power meter. However, it supports Power Meter connectivity via ANT+, particularly the Wahoo POWRLINK ZERO pedals, which provide precise power measurement with an accuracy of +/-1% and support power output of up to 1,500 watts. If users do not have a power meter, they can still use the trainer, but it will only display distance and speed data.

It also supports Bluetooth® and ANT+ FE-C connectivity, allowing compatibility with smartphones and all types of GPS devices.

KICKR Flywheel

The KICKR Flywheel is a flywheel that adds resistance during cycling sessions. Unlike traditional roller trainers that lack a flywheel, the KICKR Flywheel enhances the realism of indoor cycling, making it feel more like riding on the road. This effect is further amplified when used in conjunction with training platforms like Wahoo SYSTM or Zwift.

The flywheel weighs 10.5 pounds and provides resistance, which can be adjusted automatically by the trainer or manually by the user through an app.

When connected to a Power Meter (not included with the trainer), the KICKR ROLLR can provide both ERG mode resistance and virtual reality training. However, if not connected to a Power Meter, the trainer will automatically adjust the resistance based on the rider’s effort.

No power, no problem.

The KICKR ROLLR features a manual mode that allows it to function like a traditional roller trainer, making it ideal for pre-race warm-ups at cycling events.
